TSM is a Client Server technology. it is used for backup and restore of client data. by using using TSM we can backup sing and multiples files from client data and we can also restore single and multiple files back to client machine by using restoration technologies. In TSM client data is stored in Tapes. multiple node (or) clients data can be stored to single tape. and can be restored easily.
The main advantages of TSM are
1) Progressive Incremental Backup
2) Tape resource Sharing
3) Lan free Backup
There are two types of backup methodologies used in TSM. they are:
1) Backup: This method is used to take a additional copy of client data which is changing regularly and used for short-term purpose. In Backup we have versioning concept.
2) Archive: This method is used to take the additional copy of client data which is not changing regularly and used for long-term storage purpose. once we take archive of client we can decommission the client machine and use it for some other purpose. there is no versioning concept in archive methodology.
In TSM we execute DRM which is helpful for us to restore client data to the most current state using the DR tapes that are backedup and stored in DR site.
In TSM we use IBM Tapes to store data instead of Hard disks. Tapes act sequential access storage device i.e., we can only perform only one action at a time on the tapes.
we can take the Backup of different DB's and file exchange data from client machine. for that purpose we have plenty of client s/w's to be installed in client machines as per the backup requirement.
